Jim and Artie Mitchell were two of the most influential characters in the burgeoning San Francisco sex scene in the 1960s and ‘70s. The brothers started one of the country’s most renowned strip club/movie theaters on O’Farrell Street in San Francisco in 1969, and the place was a hub of porn activity from then on. Originally a porn theater with a makeshift movie studio upstairs, the O’Farrell Theatre was home to the Mitchell brothers’ porn empire and a shining beacon of dirty, dirty light for porn lovers all over the city. The O’Farrell theatre still operates at the corner of Polk and O’Farrell; Hunter Thompson called it the Carnegie Hall of public sex in America. In addition, the theatre served as the studio where the brothers produced their classic movie Behind the Green Door and many other films of varying success and quality.
