It is pretty much impossible to watch [Tristan Taormino]’s new “Expert Guide to Anal Sex” without making comparisons to her first porn effort, the “Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women”, a 1999 release from Evil Angel. The question is what, if anything, has Tristan learned in the last eight years that would require yet another attempt at a definitive ass-fucking educational lesson, especially since the first one (and its sequel) were called Ultimate Guides, which kind of indicates that she figured back then that she had it all pretty much in hand. The answer is, pretty much, nothing. The Expert Guide is little more than a Vivid-style treatment of the same theme – slick, pretty, and mostly bland, but far more accessible than its eight-year-old predecessor. There is some material that’s treated a little differently, but the main difference seems to be that Tristan’s initial talk is to civilians, as opposed to the audience of porn stars who showed up for the Evil Angel outing.
Anal Workshop
Tristan holds a little educational session with a group of moderately attractive people who are not introduced or identified. It’s not so much a question-and-answer session as it is a lecture, with most of the audience remaining silent throughout, except for one question from an older guy who has obviously been coached. [Lorelei Lee], a pinup-style blonde, and [Ariel X], an unremarkable brunette, arrive and engage in a little more discussion with Tristan. They liven up the proceedings a little, and then get ready while Tristan talks about lube (DON’T use lubes that contain numbing agents like benzocaine). Ariel and Lorelei are going to play, with Lorelei taking the penetrator role and Ariel getting penetrated. The play is interrupted by lecture about method, toys, and other parts of the anal sex process, and the whole thing is a little disjointed. Although they all seem to be in the same room, there is little interaction between Tristan, the “audience” and the performers. The play ends with Ariel taking three of Lorelei’s fingers, but no orgasm or visible finishing point – the whole scene is a fairly dry exercise in fingering. It’s definitely educational, with a couple of very handy tips as well as the usual standard advice about hygiene and pacing. After the workshop, we get a couple of scenes with porn stars to spice the thing up (an important note – if you watch the movie straight through, you get the educational scenes with commentary and advice, but there is a main menu option that allows you to see them as straight-up sex scenes, including the popshots that are missing from the couples-style educational versions).
[Marcos Leon] and [Ricki White] engage in a little preliminary talking to the camera before getting into the film’s first real sex scene; they play with toys including a set of anal beads and a butt plug before proceeding to the action. They demonstrate different positions, including cowgirl, missionary, and what a friend of mine used to call Persian (doggy-style with the woman on her stomach), each position getting its own chapter. There’s no money shot, and Marcos doesn’t appear to come at all, but in the post-sex cuddle session, they say they had fun. It’s definitely a couples-style scene, with some tenderness on display afterward.
[Manuel Ferrara] and [Adrianna Nicole] are up next, and their scene promises to be a good one. Adrianna, in the pre-sex interview, appears to be considerably more experienced than Ricki was, and Manuel is legendary for the care he takes and the consideration he shows for his partners while still turning out red-hot scenes. The heat between the two is enough to nullify the educational dryness of the scene, and even Tristan[s occasional voice-overs and the pop-up style balloons containing advice are held to a minimum, making it almost a regular sex session, they use a butt-plug, a dildo, and plenty of foreplay to push the action, and run through doggy-style, reverse cowgirl, and spoon before Adrianna comes to a flying-colors orgasm. Manuel, like Marcos, doesn’t come, or if he does, it’s pretty subtle. Afterwards, the two discuss the positions they were in and their various advantages.
The Expert Guide doesn’t add much to the canon established in the Ultimate Guide, aside from a couple of tips, including how to keep from having your long fingernails damage the inside of your partner’s ass (put cotton balls in the fingertips of your latex gloves). With the word Expert in the title, I was thinking maybe we’d see advice on double anal penetrations or gigantic toys, but it turns out to be pretty much the same material as the previous Guide, covered in less depth. It is less comprehensive, less informative, less well-integrated and about half as long, but it does have a couple of advantages. The Ultimate Guide was longer than it needed to be, so this one’s brevity is not a drawback. The sex is definitely more couples-friendly, and the presentation, while a little more wooden, is cleaner and more polished. The pairs in the movie do seem to have a great deal of chemistry, especially Adrianna and Manuel, and the main menu offers the option of watching the scenes without the instructional pop-ups and voice-overs (and with come-shots for the men). Also on the main menu are a bonus scene with Ariel and Lorelei in which they use more toys, an “enema how-to” featurette, a bunch of Vivid promotional stuff, and a funny and entertaining behind-the scenes segment. All that said, this is as worthwhile an investment in an anal sex guide as any other, as long as you remember that it’s not really for experts.
